SPE 130 FUNDAMENTALS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
A basic course in the study of human communication with special emphasis being given to the theory and practice of public communication. Three credit hours. Offered every semester (d & e).

SPE 220 LEADERSHIP: A COMMUNICATION PERSPECTIVE
A survey of leadership as communication. Leadership and communication, leadership communication styles, leadership and power, leadership and influence, leadership contexts, and key theoretical and applied approaches to leadership communication will be discussed. Three credit hours. Prerequisite: SPE 130. Offered as needed.

SPE 260 INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION THEORY
A survey of the current body of theory which pertains to non-verbal, interpersonal, mass communication, spoken and written communication. Language structures, meaning, encoding, decoding, social interaction, and evaluation are discussed. Three credit hours. Prerequisites: SPE 130 and WRT 175. Offered Spring semester (d).

SPE 298 SPECIAL TOPIC IN SPEECH

SPE 315 ADVANCED PUBLIC SPEAKING
An intensive study of the theory and practice of public speaking. Strategies and techniques for effective public speaking will be discussed in depth and a variety of experiences in public speaking will be offered. Three credit hours. Prerequisite: SPE 130. Offered Spring semester in even numbered years (d); offered Spring semester in odd numbered years (e).

SPE 330 SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION
An analysis of the communication process in small groups. Special emphasis is placed on the theories and practices which pertain to decision-making groups. Three credit hours. Prerequisite: SPE 130. Offered Spring semester in odd numbered years (d); offered Spring semester in even numbered years (e).

SPE 340 ORAL INTERPRETATION
An introduction to the theory and practice of oral interpretation. This course includes significant theories which pertain to oral interpretation; student exercises in the selection, analysis, and adaptation of literature for oral interpretation; and specific techniques pertaining to individual and group oral interpretation of prose, poetry, and drama. Three credit hours. Prerequisite: SPE 130. Offered as needed.

SPE 400 DEBATE
A study of the theory and practice of reasoned discourse. Theories of argument, the construction, refutation, and criticism of argument, and the roles of argumentation in a democratic society will be stressed. Three credit hours. Prerequisites: SPE 130 and WRT 200. Offered as needed.
