Program
Description
The purpose of the Child
and Youth Services major is to provide an education for persons
desiring employment in the growing field of child welfare, day
care, and youth services. Specifically, it is a program for the
purpose of training men and women to assume positions as residential
child care workers, day care facilitators, protective service workers,
and as parent educators at residential care centers, foster parent
programs, domestic violence shelters, and other youth-directed
human service facilities.
The program includes studies
which will give a basic understanding of child and adolescent psychological,
social, and physical development; social roles; agency administration
and programming; youth advocacy; and child management skills. It
also provides the opportunity for direct field experience at these
professional settings.
Goals of the program flow from its
purpose:

To establish an
understanding of children's growth processes and development
stages.

To strengthen
the awareness of the social, psychological, and cultural
factors in the growth and care of young people and of the
communities in which they live.

To provide opportunities
for students to gain an understanding of residential and
youth service philosophy developed from a strong theoretical
and practical foundation, thereby enhancing their personal
development.

To develop an
understanding of the basic economic operations involved in
the management of the child and youth service delivery system.

To enable students
to grow in an understanding of themselves and of society,
culture, and times of which they are a part.
-
To promote an
understanding of the interrelationships between child and
adolescent roles and the community structure of which they
are a part.
