VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY
|
Program
Description The Veterinary Technology program focuses on the development of laboratory testing techniques and clinical assisting procedures. Humane animal care and treatment and the importance of medical ethics are stressed. Traditional lecture courses are supplemented with intensive laboratory experience and a preceptorship. The Buffalo Zoo and the Erie County SPCA cooperate with Medaille. As a student, you will work in the animal lab on the Medaille campus as well as in animal hospitals and clinics throughout the area. The SPCA farm and other local farms provide the opportunities to work with agricultural animals. The students, therefore, will be familiar with medical procedures for companion, exotic and agricultural animals. As a Veterinary Technician, employment opportunities are available in the offices of veterinarians, animal hospitals, and pharmaceutical industry, biological testing labs, state and federal government facilities, collegs and universities, and animal breeding labs. Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to the Veterinary Technology program. All VET courses above VET 120 require formal admission to the Veterinary Technology program. To be accepted into this program, transfer students must have a 2.5 average; high school graduates, an average of 80. The Veterinary Technology program requires student time in addition to scheduled class and laboratory hours. Kennel, vivarium reponsibilities, laboratory testing, animal supervision are just some of the assigned duties which require substantial time outside the classroom. Travel to and from instructional programs (for example, Farm Animal Lab) held off the Medaille campus, necessitates student time in addition to the scheduled class and laboratory hours. Those students wishing to pursue a bachelor's degree and take courses required for veterinary school admission can do so in conjunction with the Veterinary Technology program. A Veterinary Technology Handbook of policies, procedures, and needed materials will be furnished to each enrolled Veterinary Technology student. To graduate with an Associate an overall 2.0 (C) average and not less than a 2.0 (C) average in Veterinary Technology courses. Majors in this program may not take any Veterinary Technology course Pass/Fail. Students completing the program are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician licensing examination which is acceptable for licensure in New York and many other states throughout the country.
