Medaille College offers a program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and New York State Certification Childhood 1-6 or a program leading to New York State Certification Childhood 1-6.

The Requirements for the program are:

  • six semester hours of college-level credit in each of the following subjects: English, mathematics, science, social studies;
  • a satisfactory concentration of 36 hours of college-level credit in one of the liberal arts or sciences (includes six of the hours from one of the subject areas listed above);
  • one year of college-level study or its equivalent of a language other than English;
  • 31 semester hours in professional education, which must include six semester hours of study in the teaching of reading; and
  • college-supervised student teaching at both the lower (1-3) and upper (4-6) elementary grades or its equivalent.

Each applicant for an initial certificate is required to achieve a satisfactory level of performance on the liberal arts and sciences portion and on the written assessment of teaching skills portion of the New York State Certification Examinations.

As a requirement for the Educational Preparation Program Childhood 1-6 (B.S. in Ed.), all students must complete their last 30 hours of course work at Medaille College and attain a 2.50 cumulative average.
