Blue Vertical DividerProgram Description

The Education: Middle Childhood (5-9) program is divided into two components, professional education and liberal arts. The professional education component is designed to educate students to function in the contemporary educational system and to be agents of responsible change in education. The curriculum also takes into account current career opportunities for educators. The liberal arts component is designed to offer experiences on the humanistic, scientific, philosophic and sociologic levels.

All students entering the Elementary Education program (freshmen, transfers from within Medaille, as well as those from other institutions and returning students) will be tested in the areas of usage and writing, reading comprehension, and arithmetic skills and must attain an appropriate score. If a student performs below the acceptable standard, he/she will need to take and/or retake the course(s) designated to improve weak areas and pass the course(s) with a grade of C or better.

In the freshman year, a student participates in field observations to develop an awareness of cultural and experiential backgrounds as preparation for the teaching profession. In the sophomore, junior, and senior years, experiences in working with children of elementary/middle school age make the academic program more relevant and meaningful to actual experience. These experiences also provide for the student's personal and social growth through an awareness of community needs and an opportunity to respond to these. While continuing work in the liberal arts component, the student has an opportunity to be involved in problems of teaching and decision making in elementary/middle classroom situations through simulation and actual experiences. In a wide range of situations, the educational process is explored in greater depth through the study of basic principles relating to the nature of the learner and the learning process.

All students working toward New York State Certification Middle Childhood 5-9 will become involved in the professional education component which is a field-centered program. The program provides the opportunity for completion of campus-based methods courses and two classroom student teaching situations, one at the primary grade level and the other at the intermediate grade level. Education majors are required to take the New York State Teacher Certification Examination (NYSTCE) as a prerequisite for New York State Certification.

As a requirement for graduation, all students receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education degree must attain a 2.50 cumulative average.
