Blue Vertical DividerProgram Description

The Bachelor of Science Degree program in Financial Services seeks to provide a sound educational base for individuals seeking careers in the financial sector, specifically in financial planning.

The career component provides a thorough foundation in accounting, finance, statistics, and law. The financial planning component provides courses in the fundamentals of financial, insurance, investment, tax, retirement and estate planning. This program qualifies the student to sit for the CFP™ Certification Examination.

Computer skills needed by financial professionals are developed in the computer information systems component. The opportunity to apply classroom theory in real business situations is furnished through the field experience component of the program.

In general, the Financial Services program strives to achieve a balance between career-oriented training and a traditional liberal arts education. The courses in the program seek to develop and refine oral and written communication skills, as well as a broad knowledge base in the humanities and the social sciences. The integrative purpose of the courses in the Financial Services curriculum is to produce well-rounded graduates with refined managerial skills and a robust knowledge of economic and financial theory, founded in a comprehensive liberal arts education, who are specifically prepared for a career in the financial services industry.

All Financial Services majors should complete 100-level business courses, WRT 175, WRT 200, SPE 130, ECO 200, and ECO 201 during their first two years at Medaille.

Financial Services majors are expected to attend all classes. Students are responsible for all material covered and for any announcements made in any class session whether the student is present or not. Majors in this program may not take any business course Pass/Fail. A 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) is required of all Financial Services majors in their core and elective business courses to graduate.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Financial Services, with a concentration in Financial Planning, is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).

Medaille College does not certify individuals to use the CFP™ and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and CFP™ (with flame logo) certification marks. CFP certification is solely granted by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to individuals who, in addition to completing an education requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met ethics, experience and examination requirements.
