Program
Description
Literature is about life
in all its aspects. The student who majors in LIterature will not
only build a superb storehouse of cultural information, having studied
the significant achievements of famous authors and of various periods
of literary development, but receive rigorous training in close reading,
critical writing, and analysis--excellent tools for career success
as well as the ideal preparation for law or graduate school. With
a heavy emphasis in writing and analysis, students will leave this
major with well-rounded skills in literary appreciation and expression
and with a better understanding of fellow human beings.
Majors will also benefit
from a strong core of classes chosen out of the disciplines which
make up the Humanities--art, linguistics, music, philosophy, theatre,
and writing. This core provides students with cultural literacy and
sensitivity and leads majors to develop reflective intelligences,
honed by exposure to classics of human thought and expression, philosophical
rigor, and creativity in various disciplines.
In addition, with careful
planning, the Literature major can be paired to excellent effect with
major program components in Creative Writing or Professional Writing,
creating a tailor-made dual major.
