Elementary Education
Overview
Our graduate program in Elementary Education: Childhood (grades 1-6) program is designed for individuals who hold a baccalaureate degree in an area other than education. This program emphasizes critical thinking in the classroom and prepares participants to work with students from varying backgrounds. The program arms you with the tools and knowledge you need to be successful in the field of education.
Students completing this program will earn a master’s degree in education as well as fulfill New York State academic requirements for Initial Certification in Childhood Education.
Elementary Education is offered as a full time evening cohort over four consecutive semesters. Classes begin at 6 p.m. A day and weekend option are available (offered through the Canadian Education program). Students will take coursework through the first three semesters and participate in student teaching during the last semester for a total of 42 credit hours. Using our 7.1.7 format, faculty predetermines schedules with cohorts beginning in the fall and spring semesters.
7.1.7 Format
Each 15-week semester is divided into two 7-week sessions with a 1-week break in the middle. Each class taken in the 7-week format meets ONE night per week from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and the first and last Saturdays of the session for 4.75 hours per Saturday. Classes are offered on Tuesday or Thursday evenings.
In some cases classes are better suited to run in a 15-week format. Classes that run over the entire semester meet ONE per week for 3 hours per night from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Full semester classes meet on Monday or Wednesday evenings. More about our program format »
