Suggestions
- Accept the student teacher as an entering candidate, to the profession, under your charge.
- Orient and help familiarize the student teacher with classroom routines, school procedures and school staff. Provide the student teacher with definite guidelines regarding expectations.
- Integrate the student teacher into the classroom routine within the first week so they may become an asset to the instructional setting. Start by assigning the student teacher simple teacher tasks on a regular basis, especially those that provide insights of learners.
- Advise and assist the student teacher in planning for demonstration of required competencies that are appropriate within the ongoing instructional context. If practical, the student teacher might be directed to another cooperating teacher in the school building for additional opportunities.
- Assess performance of competencies and evaluate overall development of student teachers. The Associate Teacher is not expected to be the student teacher’s task master regarding formal program requirements. The student teacher is expected to take the initiative regarding the planning and pacing of work and other requirements.
- Provide the student teacher with regular feedback regarding progress. Preferably this should be in brief written form given to the student teacher about every two to three weeks. Such an outline might stress strengths and areas needing improvement.
- If and when practical, provide the student teacher with increasing independence regarding planning and implementation of instruction.
During week four of the student teacher’s first placement and during the third week of his/her second placement we ask you to complete the Associate Teacher - Midway Evaluation to identify the “teacher related” strengths and areas in need of growth of the student teacher, and make these known to both, the student teacher and the Medaille College Student Teacher Supervisor. This should be looked upon as a positive contribution to the student teacher’s professional development. - Use the Associate Teacher - Midway Evaluation. The student teacher must sign this document after you have completed it. Please have the student teacher bring the original to the College or you may fax this to Medaille College (716-880-2959).
- Examine, and if satisfactory, approve the student teacher’s schedule for completion of all remaining field competencies.
- Provide the student teacher an opportunity for assumption of a full-time instructional opportunity for at least one to two weeks as enunciated.
- Perform those assessment functions necessary for the completion of the forms, Associate Teacher Performance Summary Evaluation. These forms may be given to the student to hand in with their exit package. The student will not receive a grade for the course and will not be able to be recommended without this paperwork on file.
- When writing a letter of recommendation, please use official letterhead stationery.
