Special Education Overview

Our graduate program in Special Education is designed for individuals who are initially certified in Elementary Education (Grades 1-6) or Middle Childhood (Grades 5-9). This program is designed to prepare teachers to focus on the unique academic, cognitive, social and emotional needs of their students, with a specific focus on general education settings. Graduates will be prepared to effectively teach students with a wide range of special needs, modify existing curriculum and materials, differentiate instruction, and work collaboratively with professionals, parents and their community.

Students completing this program will earn a Master’s Degree in Education, Certification in Special Education (Grades 1-6 or 5-9) and fulfill academic requirements to gain Professional Certification.

This program is offered as an evening cohort which may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. Students wishing to complete this program on a full-time basis will work through consecutive semesters for a total of 37 credit hours. Classes begin at 6 p.m. with cohorts beginning in the fall and spring semesters.

7.1.7 Format

Each 15-week semester is divided into two 7-week sessions with a 1-week break in the middle. Each class taken in the 7-week format meets ONE night per week from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and the first and last Saturdays of the session for 4.75 hours per Saturday. Classes are offered on Tuesday or Thursday evenings.

In some cases classes are better suited to run in a 15-week format. Classes that run over the entire semester meet ONE per week for 3 hours per night from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Full semester classes meet on Monday or Wednesday evenings. More about our program format »
