Master's in Teaching
Special Education Overview
Our graduate program in Special Education is designed for individuals who are initially certified in Elementary Education (Grades 1-6) or Middle Childhood (Grades 5-9). This program is designed to prepare teachers to focus on the unique academic, cognitive, social and emotional needs of their students, with a specific focus on general education settings. Graduates will be prepared to effectively teach students with a wide range of special needs, modify existing curriculum and materials, differentiate instruction, and work collaboratively with professionals, parents and their community.
Students completing this program will earn a Master’s Degree in Education, Certification in Special Education (Grades 1-6 or 5-9) and fulfill academic requirements to gain Professional Certification.
This program is offered as an evening cohort which may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. Students wishing to complete this program on a full-time basis will work through four (4) consecutive semesters for a total of 37 credit hours. Classes begin at 6 p.m. with cohorts beginning in the fall and spring semesters.
Content Specialty Test (CST)
To gain initial certification in Special Education, you must pass the CST, this test:
- Covers content in the subject or subjects that the corresponding certificate authorizes the holder to teach.
- Typically consists of multiple choice questions and essays.
