Sport Management
Do you rearrange your schedule to watch Monday Night Football? Are the walls of your room covered with posters of Olympic record-breakers? Combine a love of sports with the skills of business in our Sport Management program. As with many of our degrees, our Sport Management degree is unique to Western New York. Our faculty will prepare you to dive into this emerging field. After graduation - or before, during an internship - you could be working with:
- Professional and collegiate athletic teams and franchises
- Facility and event management, operations and security
- Athletic Coaching and Leadership
- Sport marketing, promotion, sponsorship and naming rights
- Sports law, employment and personnel management
- Commercial development of sport and sporting properties
- Strategic, tactical and change management
- Broadcasting, media and technology
- Community Recreation - YMCA, community centers or after-school programs
- Health and Wellness - health and fitness centers, spas and resorts
Because the $500 billion sport industry demands sport communicators, marketers, administrators, and managers with a specialized combination of functional business and sport management skills, the Sport Management program serves students who have a desire to be involved in any aspect of the commercial sport-related enterprise.
In a highly competitive field, a Sport Management degree helps identify you above the rest. It identifies you as someone who understands the dynamics of sport management and someone who is serious about a career in this field. Potential careers include: Sportswriter, Athletic Camp Coordinator, Account Representative, Sports Information Director, Fitness Facility Director and Director of Promotions, among others.
Medailles Sport Management program is accredited by the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Education (IACBE). Medaille holds membership in the North American Society for Sports Management and the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Sport Management program was developed using the joint accreditation standards of NASSM and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).
Faculty
The Sport Management program is part of the Business department, which includes faculty members who specialize in areas such as accounting, economics, financial services, human resources, marketing and sports management.
Featured Course
SPM 335 SPORT EVENT MANAGEMENT: This course emphasizes the competencies involved in the designing, planning, implementing, and evaluating of sport events. In doing so, students learn logistical skills and techniques associated with various aspects of event management including: 1) box office management; 2) security and supervision; 3) safety and medical services; 4) housekeeping and maintenance; 5) concessions and merchandise; 6) risk management and insurance; 7) media marketing of sport events; and 8) sponsorship of and hospitality at sport events. Emphasis is also placed on the experience of sport event customer and/or participant.
