College Closing Information

When inclement weather and other events interrupt normal campus operations, look to the following online and media outlets for the most up-to-date information.

The complete closing policy PDF is available below and in PDF format.

TO: Faculty, Administration, Staff and Students
FROM: Dr. Richard Jurasek, President
DATE: November 23, 2011

    Note: classes close independently for:

  • Buffalo Campus (day, evening and weekend classes)
  • Amherst Campus and Rochester Campus
  • Canadian Education Programs

Buffalo Campus Daytime Closing

Prior to 6:00 a.m. each morning, the Public Safety Director and the Operations Director will evaluate the condition of the campuses and surrounding communities and make a recommendation to Dr. Richard Jurasek, College President, to close the College.

If the decision is made to close, the Public Safety Director will notify the Communications Director, who will contact the various radio/television stations. The Public Safety Director will act as backup for notification to the media if the Communications Director is unavailable.

In addition to the media outlets, school closing information will be broadcast over the Medaille College Emergency Alert System.  Text messages, e-mails and messages to cell, office and home phones will be sent to everyone enrolled in this as well as the information will be placed on the Medaille website home page at www.medaille.edu and at www.medaille.edu/alert. Go to the Alerts page to enroll if you have not already done so.

In the event of a campus closing, the following departments are required to report to campus:

  • Campus Public Safety – report for regular duty
  • Operations/ Facility Services/Aramark – perform snow removal, report and verify condition of all buildings and systems
  • Chartwells Dining Services – prepare and provide meals for resident students

These departments reporting to campus will be asked to stay as long as is necessary.

Note: If day classes are canceled, do not assume evening classes are canceled.

Buffalo Campus Evening Closing

Similar to the daytime closing, the Public Safety Director and the Operations Director will evaluate the current conditions and evening forecasts and make a recommendation to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The Public Safety Director or the Operations Director will contact the Communications Director of the decision to close prior to 3:30 p.m., on class days, so the College has enough time to contact the radio/television stations.

If day classes have been canceled, but evening classes are to be held, the Public Safety Director or the Operations Director will notify the Communications Director to contact the radio/television stations.
