Canadian Education Program
Teacher Certification Requirements
Students who complete the program earn a master of science in education degree and are eligible for certification to teach in Ontario (primary-junior/K-6) and New York State (elementary 1-6).
STEP 1 - Liberal Arts and Science Requirements
Baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory concentration of a minimum of 30 semester hours of college level credit in one of the liberal arts and sciences.
Successful completion of at least six semester hours of college level credit in each of the following disciplines: English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
One year of college level study or its equivalent of a language other than English.

- EDL 560 Literature for Children (3 credits)
- ECI 610 Transitions from Education’s Roots to Present (3 credits)

- EDU 502 Education Methods of Teaching: Math, Science, and Technology (3 credits)
- EDU 503 Education Methods of Teaching: The Arts, English, Language Arts, and Social Studies (3 credits)
- EDU 504 Early Field Experience (3 credits)
- EDU 505 Child Abuse Identification, Substance Awareness and School Violence (3 credits)
- ECI 510 Research in Education (3 credits)
- ECI 695 Seminar: Teacher as Researcher (3 credits)

STEP 3 - Student Teaching - 6 Credits
(Approximately 14 weeks)
Primary Placement - Grades 1 - 3 (7 weeks)
Intermediate Placement - Grades 4 - 6 (7 weeks)

NYS Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)
NYS Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W) - Elementary Education
NYS Content Specialty Test (CST) - Multi Subjects
New York State Teacher Certification Examinations
Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST)
- Required for initial certificate in most titles.
- Covers historical and social-scientific consciousness, scientific and mathematical processes, artistic expression and the humanities.
- Format consists of 80 multiple-choice questions and a written assignment (essay question).
Assessment of Teaching Skills - Written (ATS-W)
- Required for initial certificate.
- Offered in two versions: elementary and secondary. (Candidates for K-12 certificates may elect either version).
- Covers knowledge of the learner, instructional planning and assessment, instructional delivery, and the professional environment.
Content Specialty Test (CST): Multi-Subjects
- Required for certificate in childhood education 1-6.
- Covers content in the subject or subjects that the corresponding certificate authorizes the holder to teach.
- Format typically consists of multiple choice questions and essay.
