Men's Basketball
2006-07
Cumulative Season Statistics »
The 2006-2007 Men’s Basketball season was a new beginning for the program with the new Head Coach Mike MacDonald bringing with him a winning attitude. The team not only featured a new Coach, but nine new players from the previous year’s roster. After winning only (4) games in the previous two seasons, the Mavericks did not take long to prove that this year’s team was going to be very different. In the season opening tournament at Case Western University (Cleveland, OH) the team had its first of many late game rallies behind the hot shooting of junior, guard Scott Hack (Angola, IN/Angola), who made (2 of 4) three pointers in the final five minutes of the game, to lead the Mavericks to a (73-65) win. Junior, guard Brandon Beers (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo) was named to the all tournament team. After dropping the Championship game they traveled to cross-town rival D’Youville to tally the second win of the season behind a (37) point, (6) assist performance from junior swing man James McNeil (Erie, PA/North West Collegiate).
The first three games were very promising, however the next five games would be the low point of the season for Medaille. They would drop 5 straight games despite a few great individual performances, including a (25) point, (17) rebound performance by sophomore, center Bill Gersitz (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) at Mt. Aloysius. To make matters worse junior, guard Brandon Beers suffered a season ending injury during the losing streak. The young Mavericks team finally ended the streak on the last game before Christmas Break with the second win of the season against D’Youville. This time the game was a total team effort with Scott Hack scoring (20) points and James McNeil scoring (19). Freshman, point guard Chris Moscato (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) added (6) assists to help lead the Mavericks to victory.
When the Mavericks reconvened after Christmas break the attitude of the team could not have been better because they knew the next 2 games would be played in the Bahama House Classic (Daytona Beach Florida). With one win on the road trip the team could accomplish one of Coach MacDonald’s major goals, to have a winning non conference record for the first time in school history. Although the Mavericks dropped their opening round game, focus remained because a win against Albany College would make the team’s goal a reality. Sophomore, guard Jacob Reisdorf (Holland, NY/Holland) made his debut in the starting lineup and would never look back. Reisdorf would become the teams defensive stopper for the remainder of the season , and this game was no different, as he recorded (5) steals and gave the Albany guards fits all game. In the end the Mavericks won the game (52-40) and freshman, forward Keith Hack (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) was named to the all tournament team behind his (13) point performance in the final game.
Despite the improvement the team had made, they still found them self (0-6) in the AMCC with Penn State Altoona coming to town and only twelve games remaining. With a gutsy performance down the stretch the Mavericks started the final twelve games with an exhilarating (57-55) win. Bill Gersitz sealed the win with a 10 foot jump shot as time expired. The Mavericks started its first winning streak of the season with a (60-59) win over La Roche with James McNeil playing hero this time hitting a game clinching three pointer with (20) seconds remaining. Steady play from sophomore, guard Mike Berkun (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) off the bench was the difference down the stretch. A (9) assist pefrformance from Chris Moscato lead to a (74-57) win over Mt. Aloyisius. In the next game a late steal by Jacob Reisdorf and two free throws from Bill Gersitz led to a (69-66) win over Pitt Bradford.
With the team in the playoff race James McNeil hit the team’s second buzzer beater of the year with an off balance three pointer that lead to an (80-77) win over Pitt Greensburg. After dropping a game they traveled to Penn State Altoona where James McNeil surpassed the (1,000) point mark with a (37) point performance, leading the Mavericks to a (77-76) overtime win. Despite a gutsy performance from junior, forward Dennis Milford (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) the team dropped the final game of the season to Hilbert College thus missing the playoffs by a single game.
Although the team missed the AMCC playoffs by a single game they definitely took a major step forward. Many players contributed in several ways throughout the season. Whenever they where called upon the bench provided great minutes, Sophomore Guard Mike Reichert (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park), freshman, forward Jonnah Whipple (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta), junior, forward Kyle White (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep), freshman, center Kelly Condello (Fairport, NYFairport), and freshman, guard, Bill McCormack (Amherst, NY/Amherst) all provided sparks off the bench and contributed key minutes. James McNeil was honored by being named second team all Conference and Mike MacDonald was named AMCC coach of the year. The Mavericks surpassed their two season win total by an amazing (7) games finishing the season (11-14). The 2006-07 Medaille College Men’s Basketball team laid a foundation that will be built upon for years to come.
