2006 Outlook

The Medaille College men’s lacrosse season is trying to shake the memory of an (0-11) 2005 campaign. The 2006 Mavs will look a lot different as they have nine freshman on their 22 man roster.

The Mavs will be led by their four captains, attackmen Bill Barnack (Lancaster), midfielder Pete Schwab (West Seneca East), attackmen Chad Gingerich (Canandaigua Academy), and junior transfer defenseman from Brockport State, Steve Lachut (Amherst).

In 2005 the Mavs had to make a midfielder into a goalie with Chris Bova (Iroquois) and he did a good job at his new position, in 2006 he will return to the midfield corps and make way for freshman Ben Dlugosh (Palmyra-Macedon) and Keith Harry (Frontier). The midfield position gained some depth in the off season as the Mavs were able to address that position in recruitment, freshman David Bennett (Palmyra-Macedon) looks like he could be a star for the Mavs for years to come and he will be aided by freshman Marc Pollinger (West Seneca East), Joel Berger (Iroquois) to go along with returning midfielders Jon Zak (Iroquois) who was the teams second-leading scorer in 2005, Kevin Pollinger (West Seneca East), Andrew Gates (Sweet Home), and Paul Thompson (St. Joe’s).

The third starting attack spot will be filled by freshman Jeff Zacharias (East Syracuse-Minoa). What seems to be the strength of this years team is the defense which has a mixture of speed, finesse and smarts. The bookends on the defense are junior, Todd Hoddick (Lancaster) and freshman, Mark Gustas (Lancaster) who will along crease defender Steve Lachut (Amherst).

At the defensive midfield position Medaille has a standout player in Casey McPartland (Baldwinsville) who is a disruptive force all over the field. Others that will be vying for defensive playing time are Jim Coleman (West Seneca East), Ben Brindise (West Seneca West), Alex Nicosia (St. Mary’s) and short stick defensive midfielder Valentino Shine (Williamsville East). It looks like the Mavericks should rebound from their tough 2005 season as they will head to Baltimore, MD in early March to begin the 2006 season.
