2005-2006 Outlook

Head Coach: Daniel J. Krzyzanowicz

The Medaille Mavericks Men’s Soccer Program enters their fourth season under head coach Daniel J. Krzyzanowicz with hopes of making the AMCC playoffs, a goal they fell one game short of in 2004. Coach K will return 9 starters and 17 varsity letter winners from the 2004 squad. Although they have so many letter winners, the Mavericks only have one returning senior Andrew Larracuente, who has captained the squad since the spring of his sophomore year. The team will be lead by its 9 returning juniors and 6 returning sophomores. “The key to any success we will have this year will be our team chemistry. I am expecting everyone to put team first and individual goals second.”

Here is a look at the returning Soccer Mavericks:

Goalkeepers

The mavericks will return two-year starter, junior Matt Casper. Matt is already the school’s record holder in career and single season shutouts. He ranked 3rd in the AMCC last season in shutouts. The team is also excited about the return of sophomore Craig Yanni, who was a key contributor in goal in the 2003 season, who missed all of last season recovering from an injury. He and Casper split time in 2003 and will again compete with each other and some incoming freshman for the starting job. Either way the team has two very good, experienced, returning keepers.

Defense

The defense for the first time in the Coach K. era, will be led by a pair of upperclassmen. Juniors Jeremy Watson (tri-captain) and Russell Allen, whom are both two-year starters, look to anchor the defense from their central defender positions. Sophomore Steve DeGroff, Junior Tony Parisi, Junior Cal Ribbeck, and Junior Jeff Au will be battling for the remaining two outside back positions.

Midfield

The middle will be anchored by three-year starter and two-time first team All-Conference selection Andrew Larracuente. He will return as a captain for the second-straight season for the Mavericks. “Andrew is no doubt the leader and heart and soul of this squad. He has been a real asset to this program and Medaille athletics the past three years and is really looking to go out with a bang. Competing for playing time in the middle alongside Andrew will be Sophomores Matt Judge and David Weiss. Matt and David both had outstanding spring seasons and we are looking for that to carry over into the fall.

Out on the flanks will be sophomore Mike Liberi, who led the team in assists in 2004 and sophomore Michel Mendez. “Mike was a very nice distributor last season for us and we are looking for him to finish a bit more this season. Mich is moving up to the midfield from defense were he was a regular starter last season to help with some goal scoring production. DeGroff, Watson, and Allen may also see some limited time in the midfield.

Forward

The top scoring threats returning to the Mavericks lineup are sophomore Mike Rhodes and junior Cory Cwiklinski. “After missing the last 6-7 games with an injury, Mike has worked really hard and will be counted on to do some scoring this season. Cory will also be looked at to finish this season along with creating opportunities for others.” Coach K. said.

Schedule

The Mavericks will play by far their most difficult schedule ever, starting right with their AMCC conference opponents. “The AMCC is one of the strongest men’s soccer conferences in the country, last year alone the top 7 teams all won eight or more games including us.” Outside of conference play, Medaille will face of against SUNY power Brockport at their home tournament and at the same tourney they will see cross-town rival Buff State who is coming of their best season in recent years making the SUNYAC playoffs last season. They also will see PAC champion and NCAA tourney team Westminster College along with ECAC qualifier and regional power Union College. The team will also play two NAIA teams Daemen College and Myers University. Rounding out the schedule with be local rival D’Youville College, SUNY Purchase, and Waynesburg College.

Junior Varsity Team

Medaille will be entering their second season of JV play in order to give more opportunities to play soccer to student-athletes. They will be playing local JV teams and junior colleges.
