Coach K is entering his 6th year as head coach of the men’s soccer team. He is coming off his finest season yet, one that saw the Mavericks break the school record for wins with 20, capture their second straight AMCC Regular Season and Post-Season Championship, in route to their 2nd straight NCAA tournament birth! This past season Medaille was one of 8 schools in the nation to receive a 1st round bye in the NCAA tournament. They obtained the bye, because of their #1 Regional Ranking. They finished the 2006 season ranked #20 in the nation according to d3kicks. He previously held the school’s win mark in 2005 with 18. Coach K also holds the career record for wins, obtaining 65 in his first five seasons. He currently ranks among the top 25 in NCAA Division III coaches in winning percentage. Coach K has worked some of the most prestigious soccer camps in the country including Indiana University. During those camps Coach K increased his knowledge coaching with some of the top Div I coaches in the country and current Major League Soccer (MLS) players.
Last season, Coach K lead the team to an impressive 20-1-1 overall record and a .932 overall winning percentage. The team also went 10-0-1 during AMCC Conference play and won the AMCC Playoff Championship at home after earning the right to host the tournament. With the conference playoff Championship the Men’s soccer team became Medaille Colleges 1st ever Medaille College team to host an NCAA tournament match.
Coach K’s team finished the 2006 season ranked 20th in the Nation according to D3KICKS. His team also set the NCAA all-time scoring record with 110 goals in the season giving them the NCAA record of a 5.0 GPG average. This surge was lead in part by the NCAA Division III scoring champion and 1st Team All-American senior Ryan Mangano. Other big individual awards went to senior Cory Cwiklinski (2nd Team All-American), senior Jeremy Watson (All-Region), senior Craig Yanni (All-Region), and freshman Gary Boughton (All-Region).
During his 5 years at the college his teams have compiled a 65-23-8 (.719) record and he has already become the school’s all-time leader in career wins and win percentage. Under Coach K’s steady guidance the Mavericks have broken every single season and career record in school history. Coach K has coached 3 All-American, 8 regional All-Americans, 3 Academic Regional All-Americans, 3 Conference Players of the Year, 2 Conference Newcomers of the Year, 24 All-Conference performers and was named the 2005 and 2002 Conference Coach of the Year. Coach K’ s teams have found tremendous success over the past two seasons as they are (38-3-3) in their (44) games and (21-0-1) in their (22) conference matches over that time span.
In 2001 Coach K was named head coach of the Ripley (NY) High School boy’s varsity soccer team. Under his tutelage, the team qualified for the Section VI finals and broke five school records. He also held the varsity track head coaching position at Frankfort (New York) High School in 1999 — the first year of the school’s track program — and mentored several section finalists while the team finished second in the conference. Coach K is a very active member of the local community, as he has been volunteering his time for 13 years as a coach for the NCSA soccer organization in Chautauqua County and the Clarence Soccer Club.
Coach K holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma NSCAA National Diploma along with a USSF Soccer Coaching License and received degrees from Defiance College in 2001 and Herkimer County Community College in 1998. He was a two-year starter on the Defiance soccer team and participated in both indoor and outdoor track and field.
Associate Head Coach: Lou Vitello (4th year)
Coach Vitello is entering his 4th year as the associate head coach of the men’s soccer team. He brings a wealth of knowledge and coaching experience to the Mavericks program. He is the Director of Coaching and Development with the Clarence Soccer Club. Coach Vitello spent six years as the boy’s varsity soccer coach and won six league championships and two sectional championships. He also was an assistant coach in 2003 to the women’s soccer team at Medaille, before joining the men’s team in 2004. Coach Vitello holds the USSF Coaching License, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and NSCAA National Youth Diploma. Coach Vitello holds a Bachelor’s and masters degree from the University of Buffalo.
Assistant Coaches:
Charles Woods (3rd Year)
Coach Woods is entering his third season as a Mavericks assistant and brings with him an impressive college playing career. The ’04 graduate of Medaille College, Coach Woods played 2 seasons under current head Coach Dan Krzyzanowicz. During his 2 seasons at Medaille he was named all-conference 1st team both years and conference new comer of the year his first season. He played 2 seasons previously at Niagara County Community College, where he was team MVP twice. In total, Coach Woods ranked in the top 25 in the nation in assists and points 3 seasons, won 3 MVP awards, 4 all-conference teams, 3 all-region teams, and lead his team in points 3 times.
Andrew Larracuente (1st year)
Perhaps the most accomplished player to ever dawn the Medaille College soccer kit, Andrew is returning to the program he helped guide to their first NCAA birth this time as a member of the coaching staff. Andrew spent this past season playing for Queen City Futbol club, an NPSL league team and helped lead the team to the NPSL National Championship match, it’s first season of existence. For his efforts the starting center back was selected the team’s CO-MVP.
Cory Cwiklinski (1st year)
Cory is returning to Medaille as a Graduate assistant in athletics and also an assistant coach on the team he was a two-time captain off. During his illustrious playing career, Cory was quite possibly the most decorated player in school history. Cory was a 2-time All-American, 2-time Conference Player of the Year, 2003 NCAA National Scoring Champion, and 4-time All-Conference Member. His name is also in the NCAA Record book 6 times, including being names to the prestigious 40-40 club.
Matt Andrews- Goalkeeper Coach (3rd Year)
Coach Andrews is in his third year as goalkeeper coach for both the men’s and the women’s programs as well as an assistant with the women. Prior to coming to Medaille, Coach Andrews spent seven seasons coaching at the varsity level at Gates-Chili in Rochester and Clarence in Buffalo. He has trained goalkeepers in western New York for the past decade. Coach Andrews is originally from Penfield, New York and holds undergraduate degrees from Miami University and a graduate degree from SUNY Brockport.
