2005-2006 Outlook

Medaille enters its 4th season under head coach Robyn Ventura. The Mavericks hope to improve on their 3rd place finish in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC).

Meet the Team

Pitching staff: This years staff will be anchored by returning ace Michelle Peruzzini (Cheektowaga/JFK). Peruzzini, an all-conference selection in 2005, handled the majority of the pitching duties last season throwing in 30 games, 21 complete, and posting a 14-10 record. In her sophomore campaign she recorded 105 strikeouts and held opponents to a .261 batting average. Michelle, a captain for the 2006 season, has worked extremely hard in the off season and is eager to lead her team to the conference playoffs. Fellow junior Denise Sievert (Fredonia/Fredonia) hopes to take some of the pressure off Peruzzini this season. Sievert went 4-5 in 2005 and has been working hard in the preseason to ensure her success.

Catcher: Sophomore Amanda Baker (Lyons/Newark) returns for the Mavericks after an impressive freshman year. Amanda was named team MVP, conference player of the year, conference newcomer of the year, first team all-region and third team all-America. She led the AMCC in nearly every offensive category and was ranked in the top 25 in the nation in five offensive categories.

Infield: Returning captain Sara Vertalino (West Seneca/Mt. Mercy) looks to have another outstanding season for the Mavs. The senior received all-conference honors in 2005 for her play at second base. Sara is a very versatile infielder and brings experience to the team, having started for 3 years. Senior Maggie Wilcox (Liverpool/Liverpool) returns to first base for her final season. Wilcox had a stand out season in 2005 and hopes to repeat that success in her final season. An all-conference selection, she hit over .400 in conference and will be a strong force from the clean-up position in the batting order. Shannon “Super” Superczynski (Cheektowaga/ Villa Maria Academy) returns to the infield after a successful freshman season at shortstop. Super hit .412 from the leadoff spot and will look to lead the infield with her spirit and athleticism. Sophomore Shannon O’Brien (Cheektowaga/JFK) will be in the hot corner this season. O’Brien is making the transition from second to third in her sophomore campaign. Infielder Katie McClelland (Oswego/Oswego) will be looked upon as a utility player this season. McClelland’s quickness and strong bunting skills should earn her a spot in the hitting line-up.

Outfield: This year's outfield has one returning starter to the line-up. Sophomore Sara Lewis (Barker/Barker), who started in right field in 2005, will make the transition to left field this season. Joining Lewis in the outfield will be sophomore LeighAnn Superczynski (Cheektowaga/Villa Maria) in centerfield and junior Lauren Smith (Buffalo/Kenmore East) in right field. Newcomer Kim Benway (Fairport/Fairport) will also be competing for a spot. Communication will be the key to success for the young outfielders this season.

Stephanie Menth (Buffalo State College 2000-03) returns as the outfield coach for her third season with the team. Joining the coaching staff this season are Jean Mayfield (Medaille 2002-05) and Deanna Hunt (Buffalo State College 1993-96). Mayfield, a four year starter in centerfield, will be assisting with the outfield coaching responsibilities. Hunt joins the staff as a pitching coach after having been an assistant coach at Canisius College.
