The New York State Education Department has approved Medaille College's advanced certificate in mental health counseling, an option that will fulfill the education requirement for license eligibility in that field for qualified students.
As the first online program of its kind in New York State, this advanced certificate prepares professionals who already have a graduate degree in a counseling field, such as school counseling, rehabilitation counseling or community counseling, to pursue licensure as a mental health counselor.
"We have developed this program to provide a ‘bridge’ to New York State licensure for those individuals with master’s degrees in counseling, but who are not currently eligible to become licensed mental health counselors," said Deborah Legge, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Graduate Counseling and Psychology. "By the time participants complete the program, they will have research-based knowledge and clinical experience providing mental health assessment and treatment as well as a thorough understanding of professional, legal and ethical issues in this field."
In this 18-credit program, students take the coursework required to complete the educational requirement set by New York State and complete a 600-hour clinical practicum. Graduates are able to obtain a temporary permit to work in the field. They must fulfill the 3000-hour New York State post-graduate experience requirement, and pass a national qualifying exam to be eligible for permanent licensure.
The introduction of this advanced certificate is one of several options available for graduate education at Medaille in the field of psychology and mental health counseling. Along with a doctorate in clinical psychology (PsyD) starting in fall 2012, the College offers a master’s degree in mental health counseling, a master’s degree in psychology and an advanced certificate in marriage and family therapy.
The advanced certificate in mental health counseling program is currently accepting applications for spring 2012 enrollment. Classes will be held online.
The instructors were knowledgeable and welcomed class discussions, with
respect for each student's contribution. I've learned how to be a more
effective leader. My capstone class gave insight on how to combine all
the education learned to operate a business. That's when I realized how
much I had sharpened my knowledge.
