On Tuesday, May 8 the School of Education (SOE) held its first “Technology Day” at the Amherst Campus. The event featured keynote speaker Randy Schenk, a technology specialist with the Rochester City School District, who spoke about the importance of using technology in the K-12 classrooms, focusing on the use of iPads and educational apps.
Will Barnes ’11 and Barry Schaub ’11 also presented during the event. Barnes presented on “paperless classrooms” and websites that serve as resources in the elementary classroom. He also joined Mary Beth Scumaci, clinical assistant professor, for a work session that helped faculty learn about creating interactive posters using Glogster. Schaub taught attendees how to use Prezi presentation software and integrated and presented with Scumaci on Voki avatars.
The event, which was organized by the SOE Technology Committee and supported by Illana Lane, Ph.D., ended with a powerful discussion on how these technology tools will be integrated into effective teaching practice.

The instructors were knowledgeable and welcomed class discussions, with
respect for each student's contribution. I've learned how to be a more
effective leader. My capstone class gave insight on how to combine all
the education learned to operate a business. That's when I realized how
much I had sharpened my knowledge.
