Awards Presented at 2014 Founders' Day Celebrationnext
On Wednesday, April 9 over 225 people gathered "center stage" at Shea's Performing Arts Center for Medaille College's 2014 Founders' Day Celebration, where the Fr. Medaille Awards for Service & Citizenship were presented.
The event, chaired by Heidi A. Raphael '85, showcased "Buffalo's Past, Present and Future," and included appearances by Lucille Ball, Teddy Roosevelt, and Mark Twain. Keynote speaker, Dottie Gallagher-Cohen, president & CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership spoke about Buffalo's future.
Patrick Brown, a junior majoring in business administration was the student recipient of the Fr. Medaille Award for Service & Citizenship. Brown is involved with leading a soccer clinic at the Kids Escaping Drug Compound in Buffalo. Additionally, he is an active member of the entrepreneurial club ENACTUS and is currently managing their "Totally Active Kids" project, which brings together Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations for at-risk children with the Medaille Men's Soccer team for a series of soccer clinics.
The Fr. Medaille Award for Service & Citizenship is awarded at the Founders' Day Celebration each year in honor of Fr. Jean Pierre Medaille and the Sisters of St. Joseph, who embraced and lived fully in service to those in need.
Dr. Craig Centrie, an associate professor in Medaille's School of Education was this year's faculty recipient. Dr. Centrie continually demonstrates his commitment to civil rights and social justice, and he has lectured widely in Europe, Latin America, and Asia on education, art, and human rights. Dr. Centrie also received the Hoyt Visionary Leadership Award in 2012 for his work to bring equality to LGBT people of the State of New York.
The alumni recipient of the Fr. Medaille Award for Service & Citizenship was Gayle Eagan '66, Esq., a partner at Jaeckle, Fleischmann & Mugel, LLP. Eagan is extremley active in the Buffalo community and has dedicated most of her life to serving others. She is co-founder and president of Canopy of Neighbors, Inc., an organization that assists persons over the age of 62 and helps them to remain in their homes as they age. A product of Eagan's vision and passion, Canopy of Neighbors, Inc., provides subscribers with practical services including bill paying, companionship, home repairs and much more.
The organization recipient at the Celebration was WNY United Against Drug & Alcohol Abuse, Inc., whose mission is to increase awareness, educate and mobilize individuals and groups to actively participate in proven strategies to prevent substance abuse. WNY United positively impacts the lives of nearly 9,000 local students by bringing research based programming directly into the classroom.
