Medaille College in the Buffalo-Niagara region of New York offers three master’s level programs, one doctoral degree and certificates in psychology and mental health. While each program is grounded in both theory and clinical practice, they differ in their areas of focus and professional outcomes.

What is Marriage and Family Therapy?
A Marriage and Family Therapist works with people to function better in their relationships. The Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy is a specialized program that will prepare you to work with individuals, families and couples in the context of their overall family systems.
Medaille’s Marriage and Family Therapy program meets the New York State educational requirements for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist.
Degree offered: Master of Arts (MA)
Duration and schedule: Meets one weekend a month over a two-and-a-half-year period.
Distinctives: Cohort model, in which all students move through the program together; final, culminating project
Practicum: 500-hour practicum; 16-20 hours per week over a 12-month period
Careers: People who get MFT degrees go on to become marriage and family therapists working in a variety of settings.
What is Mental Health Counseling?
A Mental health Counselor evaluates and treats people with emotional and behavioral issues that can range from career concerns to mental illness. The Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling is a broad-based degree that gives you the background and clinical experience to practice as a Mental Health Counselor in a variety of settings. This program meets the New York State educational requirements for licensure as a Mental Health Counselor.
Degree offered: Master of Arts (MA)
Duration and schedule: Meets one weekend a month over a two-and-a-half-year period.
Distinctives: Cohort model, in which all students move through the program together; comprehensive exam; 100-hour pre-practicum that counts toward internship hours Internship: 600-hour internship; 12-15 hours per week over a 12-month period
Careers: Mental Health Counseling graduates go on to work in community mental health agencies, in schools and universities, as private practitioners, teachers, hospitals, social service organizations and other settings.
What is the Master of Arts in Psychology?
The Master of Arts in Psychology degree is a general psychology degree that provides a broad background in the field in addition to exposing you to research methods. This degree prepares you for doctoral study in psychology or to advance your career in business, education, research and government.
Degree offered: Master of Arts (MA)
Duration and schedule: Two-evenings per week and one Saturday every two months over a one-year period
Distinctives: Cohort model, in which all students move through the program together, thesis or 180-hour internship; faculty mentoring in academic and professional development
Careers: Master of Arts in Psychology graduates go on to further graduate study in psychology doctoral programs and to enhanced career opportunities in schools, government, health care agencies, human resources departments and disability services.
What is a Doctorate of Psychology in Clinical Psychology?
The Doctorate of Psychology in Clinical Psychology degree at Medaille is a rigorous program prepares students for the highest level of clinical practice in the field. The PsyD adheres to the practitioner-scholar model of the National Council of Schools and Programs in Professional Psychology, which teaches evidence-based treatment methods. Though the PsyD program is practice-focused, it also will give you a robust background in theory and applied research. This program satisfies the New York requirements for licensure as a psychologist.
Degree offered: Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Duration and schedule: Full-time over five years
Distinctives: Concentrations in General Adult or Child and Family; comprehensive exam, clinical dissertation Practica: 500-hour assessment practicum; 500-hour therapy practicum
Internship: One-year full-time internship
Careers: Doctor of psychology graduates go on to become leaders in their field as consultants, private practitioners, school and hospital psychologists, professors, post-docs, law enforcement and other settings.
What is the Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling?
This certificate prepares professionals who already have master’s degrees and are working in a related field with the educational requirements to pursue Mental Health Counseling licensure in New York.
Duration and schedule: Up to 18-credit hours based on your transcripts
Distinctives: Offered online Internship: 600-hour internship, if needed
What is the Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling?
This certificate prepares those of you who already have master’s degrees and are working in a related field with the background to work with individuals, couples and families and to pursue Marriage and Family Therapy licensure in New York.
Duration and schedule: Meets one-weekend per months for one year
Practicum: 500-hour Marriage and Family practicum, which requires 16-20 hours over nine months

The instructors were knowledgeable and welcomed class discussions, with
respect for each student's contribution. I've learned how to be a more
effective leader. My capstone class gave insight on how to combine all
the education learned to operate a business. That's when I realized how
much I had sharpened my knowledge.
