Frequently Asked Questions for Associate Teachers
Q. What are my responsibilities as an associate teacher?
A. You are a mentor to the student teacher assigned to you. If possible, meet or speak with your assigned student teacher prior to the beginning of the placement. Your responsibilities include observing the student teacher daily, reviewing the student teacher’s lesson plan(s) and completing the necessary evaluation/assessment forms. For more information and a copy of the forms, see the Associate Teacher section of our website at www.medaille.edu/studentteaching/.
Q. What is the length of student teaching?
A. The student teacher will be with you for approximately 7 weeks.
Q. What do I do with the completed evaluation/assessment forms?
A. Completed assessment forms should be given to the student teacher. It is their responsibility to turn in all the original documentation to the College at the scheduled Exit Meeting.
Q. Who do I contact if there are questions or issues with the student teacher, the process or the evaluation forms?
A. All questions or issues surrounding the student teacher placement should be directed to the student’s college supervisor. The name and phone number of the supervisor will be on the confirmation letter. If you are unable to speak with the college supervisor, contact Maria Weimer, Coordinator, Office of Student Teaching/Certification, at maria.weimer@medaille.edu.
Q. Do I get paid for hosting a student teacher?
A. Associate teachers receive a stipend payment for hosting a student teacher. Payments to associate teachers are processed twice a semester, once for each placement period. Associate teachers are required to complete the Reimbursement Form for Associate Teachers and return it to the Office of Student Teaching/Certification by the end of the first week of the student teacher placement. The form can be found at http://www.medaille.edu/college/hr/reimbursement_associateteachers.pdf.
Q. When can I expect my payment?
A. Checks are issued at the end of the student teaching experience in October, December, March, and May. If your student teacher’s placement is completed in May, we strongly suggest that associate teachers include their home mailing address in case checks arrive after the school has closed for the year. Checks mailed to our Canadian associate teachers can take up to 2-4 weeks depending on the postal service.
Q. Who do I contact if I have a question about my check?
A. Checks can take 2-4 weeks to arrive after the placement has been completed. If after this time you have not received your check, or if there is a problem with your check, contact the Office of Student Teaching/Certification.
