A. Introduction: The Purpose of Vivarium Duty

The purpose of vivarium is to acquaint students will the general nursing care, husbandry and record keeping associated with facility animals. This includes restraint, physical examinations, TPRs (temperature, pulse and respirations), medicating (oral, injectable and topical), cleaning, feeding, facility sanitation and following directions on animal records, as well as developing skills in recognizing problems and appropriately relaying information to the Vivarium Supervisor.

Vivarium is performed as part of VET 120 Introduction to Laboratory Animal Science and constitutes a portion of your grade for this class.

Vivarium is a vital part of your clinical learning experience which cannot be taught in a classroom setting or duplicated using computer simulations. What you learn here will be invaluable to you on a daily basis as a laboratory animal technician and can make a critical difference in the health and well-being of the animals that are entrusted to your care.

The Technician on Duty is posted outside the Cat Room (D-108) on the bulletin board and will be:

  • Katie Maley - Vivarium Supervisor - Room D-211 - Phone 884-3411 ext. 303
  • Lisa Komasara - Room D-103 - Phone 8843411 ext. 122
