About Joellen Stender

Dr. Joellen Stender joined the full time faculty at Medaille College as a Clinical Assistant Professor in January 2019. Dr. Stender received her B.S. in Psychology from Medaille College and completed her M.A. in Mental Health Counseling and Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Prior to joining the faculty at Medaille, Dr. Stender was an adjust professor for eight years at the State University of New York at Buffalo and has been working in community mental health counseling since 2009. She has worked with a wide range of clients, with a focus on women’s emotional health, depression, post-partum depression, anxiety, bipolar and PTSD. She has a special interest in trauma informed care and working with veterans. She is currently the program director at a local community mental health agency and oversees the outpatient integrated programs and the PROS program at that site while maintaining a small caseload.

Dr. Stender’s teaching and clinical interests include assessment and treatment planning, case conceptualization, group work, professional orientation and supervision. Her research interests include perceptions of self-care, vicarious trauma and grief and loss. Dr. Stender is a member of the New York Mental Health Counseling Association and is licensed as a Mental Health Counselor in New York. She has also completed basic training in EMDR and comprehensive DBT.
