Gifts of Stock

Did you know that appreciated stock is one of the most tax-efficient ways to make a charitable gift? Learn how a gift of stock can yield a wealth of benefits for you — and for Medaille College.

Top 5 Reasons to Donate Stock

  • Support What Matters Most
You can direct your stock gift to the school, department, or program that means the most to you at Medaille.
  • Deliver Immediate Impact
Gifts of stock are considered “current-use” and count toward annual and reunion giving totals.
  • Giving is Simple
A transfer can be as simple as a phone call and written confirmation, and may be completed online, by mail or in person.

Planned Giving Frequently Asked Questions

Bequests

Anyone can make a bequest to Medaille College through a will or trust. You may support areas important to you at the College or provide an unrestricted gift that will be applied to Medaille’s most urgent needs.

Bequests may be given as:

  • A percentage of an estate
  • A specific dollar amount
  • A gift of personal property (e.g., real estate or artwork)
  • When you make a bequest, you are making a gift that costs nothing during your lifetime.

A bequest is simple language you place in your will that states a specific amount, or percentage of your estate, to be left to Medaille after your obligations are met. Just a few sentences in your will or trust are all that is needed to ensure future students can receive an outstanding education that challenges and supports their educational goals.

Even if you have an existing will, you can add an amendment, or codicil, at any time. Since a codicil doesn’t replace the original will, it can be an inexpensive and simple way to make a bequest to Medaille College. If you don’t have a will, we encourage you to consider writing one that clearly states your intentions and provides security for your family, other loved ones and charities that you support during your lifetime.

A bequest:

  • Is easy to arrange
  • Will not alter your current lifestyle in any way
  • Can be easily modified to address your changing needs

To discuss your giving options in confidence, please contact John Crawford at (716) 880-2879 or plannedgiving@medaille.edu.

As always, seek the advice of your financial or legal advisor to make sure this method of supporting Medaille is right for you.

Sample Bequest Language

You may wish to use the following language when establishing a legacy gift to Medaille College:

Unrestricted Gift

Restricted Gift
I give and bequeath to Medaille College of Buffalo, New York, the sum of $___ (or, ___% of my residuary estate), to be used for [state the specific purpose, program, or fund].

Beneficiary Designations

Retirement and Life Insurance Beneficiary Designations

You can easily name Medaille College as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan, such as an IRA, 401(k) or 403(b).

Simply complete a beneficiary designation form with your insurance policy provider or with the administrator of your retirement plan. Both can be done at no cost.

Medaille College can be designated as a partial (1–99 percent), whole, or contingent beneficiary, and Medaille’s tax-exempt status enables your assets to pass to the College tax-free.

Like a bequest, a beneficiary designation enables you to:

  • Make a significant contribution to Medaille College without drawing on current assets
  • Remove assets from your estate and reduce tax liability
  • Help secure Medaille’s longterm success, while managing your own financial future

To discuss your giving options in confidence, please contact John Crawford at (716) 880-2879 or plannedgiving@medaille.edu.

As always, seek the advice of your financial or legal advisor to make sure this method of supporting Medaille is right for you.

How Charitable IRA Rollovers Work

Under recent federal legislation, you can use your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to make a gift to your favorite charitable institutions, including Medaille College.

Individuals age 70 ½ and older can now instruct their IRA administrators to make a distribution directly to Medaille and exclude the amount of the gift from their gross income for federal tax purposes.

By making an IRA charitable rollover, you can:

  • Satisfy your required minimum distribution
  • Avoid federal and, in many cases, state income taxes
  • Maximize your charitable gift — and create an immediate and tangible impact at Medaille

To be eligible:

  • You must be 70 ½ years of age or older at time of distribution
  • Total charitable gifts cannot exceed $100,000 per taxpayer each year
  • Transfers from traditional and Roth IRAs must be made directly from the account administrator to Medaille College

To make a gift:

  • Contact your IRA administrator to request that a charitable distribution be transferred to Medaille College
  • Instruct your IRA administrator to indicate the donor’s name on the check and specify that the gift is an IRA charitable distribution (to ensure gifts are properly recognized and recorded)

Send your check to:

Buffalo, NY 14214

Gifts of Real Estate

Donors may give a gift of real estate to Medaille College and reap wide-ranging financial benefits while touching the lives of tomorrow’s students.

Those interested may want to consider these giving options:

  • An outright gift that provides a charitable income tax deduction for the full market value and eliminates capital gains tax on any appreciation
  • A retained life estate that offers a sizable income tax deduction while enabling you and your spouse to live in your home for life
  • A charitable remainder trust funded with your property that offers a lifetime income stream and a significant charitable income tax deduction — and eliminates capital gains tax on any appreciation

Charitable Trusts

Charitable Lead Trust

Charitable Remainder Trust

Charitable Lead Trust

Your generous donation as a charitable lead trust offers many benefits. A charitable lead trust allows you to benefit from the tax savings of a charitable gift without giving up the assets that you’d like to benefit your family someday with a donation in the form of a charitable lead trust.

There are two ways that charitable lead trusts make payments to Medaille College:

  • A charitable lead annuity trust pays a fixed amount each year to Medaille College. This option is more attractive when interest rates are low.
  • A charitable lead unitrust pays a variable amount each year based on the value of the assets in the trust. With a unitrust, if the trust’s assets go up in value, for example, the payments to Medaille College also increase.

You may fund your donation with:

  • Cash
  • Appreciated securities
  • Closely-held stock
  • Real estate

To confidentially discuss your giving options, please contact John Crawford at (716) 880-2879 or plannedgiving@medaille.edu.

As always, seek the advice of your financial or legal advisor to make sure this method of supporting Medaille is right for you.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A charitable remainder trust is a way for you to maintain your comfortable estate while continuing to receive reliable payments. At the end of the trust term, the balance in the trust is used to support Medaille College as you specify.

These types of gifts may offer you tax benefits and the option for income. There are two ways to receive payments and each has its benefits:

  1. The charitable remainder annuity trust pays you, each year, the same dollar amount you choose at the start. Your payments stay the same, regardless of fluctuations in trust investments.
  2. The charitable remainder unitrust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. The amount of your payments is redetermined annually. If the value of the trust increases, so do your payments. If the value decreases, however, so will your payments.

You can fund your donation with:

  • Cash
  • Appreciated securities
  • Closely-held stock
  • Real estate
  • Retirement plan assets
  • Tangible personal property

To confidentially discuss your giving options, please contact John Crawford at (716) 880-2879 or plannedgiving@medaille.edu.

As always, seek the advice of your financial or legal advisor to make sure this method of supporting Medaille is right for you.

A letter from Medaille student Julia Khoury

Julia Khoury '22“The Medaille community stands behind its students to help them find their passion in following any path they choose. A budding entrepreneur, I have my own business offering facial threading and eyebrow tinting. I’m taking what I’ve learned through my coursework, like advertising and business legalese, and applying it to my business. I obtained my licenses, designed a logo, business cards and marketing materials, and I know you can never learn too much. I currently rent space at a salon, but plan to someday open a full-service salon. I am, and will always be, my own boss. It all starts with pursuing my degree, made possible by people like you.

Being at Medaille has not only enhanced my leadership skills, but also given me the confidence and knowledge I’ll need for success. Inspired by my brother’s own challenges cerebral palsy, I’ve used my platform as an ambassador for The Make Lemon Aide Foundation for Cerebral Palsy (CP) to raise thousands of dollars, make connections, and build awareness for this cause that is so close to my heart. I know I’m making a difference. I hope to open and own a play center with adaptive equipment for people with special needs. I want all children to feel welcome and to be able to take part in all activities, regardless of ability.

Medaille’s dedicated faculty and staff inspire and encourage curiosity, wonder and creativity as a foundation for academic, professional and personal growth. They serve as professors, advisors, coaches and mentors. Medaille has helped me in all facets of my life – economic, social, personal, professional and academic. From advisement on completing financial aid applications, to college planning, to learning about small business grants, I have access to incredible resources here.

Sometimes, you feel like you’re not set up to succeed when you come from a certain background. Medaille created a community for me. It’s very diverse, with students from different countries and backgrounds. I can trust them and they trust me, and for me, that’s important. With the help of this community, I now feel at home and ready to overcome any challenge that I have to face in the future.

Today’s scholarship recipients are tomorrow’s accountants, mental health counselors, teachers, biologists, veterinary technicians and entrepreneurs. Your kindness and generosity has enabled students like me to focus more on working hard to achieve good grades, and less about the financial burden college poses. It gives us the opportunity to focus on our education and career goals. It not only changes our lives, but the lives of our community members as well.

Thank you for considering investing in future leaders, like me.”

A letter from Medaille student Mohamed Maalim

Mohamed Maalim“I would like to say thank you for your donation to the college to support my education. I accept your gracious offer of kindness and support. I can’t find any words to express how much this means to me. I take my education very seriously and won’t let your kindness go to waste. This scholarship made me so happy because now I know there are people out there besides my friends and family that will help me pursue the education that I always wanted.

I would like to take this time to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born in a refugee camp in Kenya called Kakuma. My parents worked and fought so hard for me to be able to come to America and give me education. They wanted for me to grow up free and plant the seed of knowledge into me so one day I can change not just my country but the whole African continent and soon the world. I admire Nelson Mandela a lot. If it wasn’t for him, I would have not be interest in chasing knowledge as much as I am now. He said “Knowledge is power” and as I grew up I started to learn what he meant more and more. Now I am a sophomore at Medaille College and my major is Business Management. I want to be the first person in my family to get a MBA and PHD. The journey ahead is a difficult but I have friends and family that always support me. I know more stuff then I did when I was younger but my wisdom is still a seed that doesn’t have enough roots yet. So I need education nurture me so I can grow more roots and become tree and then no one will be able cut me down.

Once again I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will work hard so that the opportunity you gave me won’t go to waste. I’ll make this promise to you right now that in the near future when I complete my education the next time you hear my name it will be followed by “Mohamed Maalim has changed the entire world” and if I couldn’t do it ill make sure I’ll pass my will to all the good people I meet as I continue my life. Now you’ve become one of the people that I am very thankful and grateful. If my dream comes true you are one of the biggest supporters because you helped with my education.”

A letter from Medaille student Caitlyn Cornish

Caitlin CornishThank you so much for choosing me to be a recipient of your scholarship. Your investment in my future is priceless – it is unlikely that I will succeed without supports like you. With your contribution, I am able to move further towards my goal of obtaining my doctoral degree.

I am sure you’d like to know more about the person you have decided to support. I am a senior psychology student here at Medaille, with a minor in ethics. I am a first-generation college student, and I come from a low-income family. Both of my parents work at least two jobs, and I work at Keuka Lake State Park in the heart of the Finger Lakes. I also have three on-campus jobs at Medaille. My transition to college was difficult – I had no one to support and guide me. I struggled to get loans – I had no credit, and my parents’ credit was too low. Luckily, I learned how to be my own advocate. I applied for scholarships, grants, and was accepted into TRiO. I made connections with my professors, and asked for help when I needed it. Now, as a senior, I value these connections more than any knowledge obtained here. It may sound crazy, but I have learned more from these role models than I have from textbooks.

My first semester, I landed on the Dean’s List, but with a GPA that I am still disappointed in today (3.54). Since then, I have learned to adjust, and fight for success. I have since earned a 4.0 in every other semester, of course been named to the Dean’s list every semester, received the Medaille Medal, the 2018 Undergraduate of the Year Award, and so much more. I hope to bring these successes and lessons with me as I pursue a doctoral degree in neuroscience. I can ensure you that your support will be invaluable in this path.

Again, thank you for choosing to invest in my education. I look forward to creating a successful and wonderful future with your support.

A letter from Medaille student Erica Harris

Medaille Student Erica HarrisI am writing this letter to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generous donation. Words are not enough to express my gratitude. When I received the email confirming that I was selected, it brought tears to eyes. I have always believed in myself, but knowing that I have earned your support reinforces my desire to continue to build on my success. It is both an honor and privilege to be award this scholarship.

I am starting my second year at Medaille College, pursuing a bachelor of business administration in information systems. I am married and have a daughter who is six years old. I work full time and go to school, to better myself. Balancing the roles of wife, mother, student and employee can be challenging. I have personally had to make many sacrifices to be a successful college student. My biggest challenge through my time in college has been dealing with my husband’s struggle with cancer. I decided to pursue a college education at a time my husband was cancer free, but little did I know life had a different plan for us. In my three consecutive years being at college my husband has had cancer again, and over a dozen surgeries. There were times I had driven straight from Cleveland Clinic and would go directly to class, while my husband was recovering from surgery or staying out there for radiation. After watching him struggle I realized that I had to be the financial future for my family. School became the sole focus in my life because the sad reality is that my husband may not be around. I know your investment in me will continue to strengthen my knowledge, and help me get closer to my career goals.

Thank you again for this wonderful contribution. I will continue my hard work and dedication to my education. It was great to receive such an honor during a challenging time. I am appreciative and grateful. Thank you for your support, it means the world to me.

A letter from Medaille student Alyssa Murzynowski

Medaille Student AllyssaThank you for this scholarship. Receiving this scholarship is a huge help on myself financially. I have a passion for helping and leading others. Your support will help me continue to grow that passion and hope to make this world a better place one small act at a time. This scholarship enables me to save extra money to attend graduate school after completing my bachelor’s degree.

I am currently studying accounting and will be starting my senior year this fall. My dad is a retired City of Buffalo firefighter and my mother is a toll collector for the New York State Thruway. I have two older siblings. This summer I am interning at Sodexo as a project management intern. I have also interned as a tax intern this past tax season. During the semesters I work in the undergraduate admissions office as an ambassador, as an orientation leader, and as a pathways peer mentor. I am also the captain of the Women’s Cross-Country team this year. I want to attend graduate school and receive my master’s in accounting and take the CPA exam shortly after. I am very driven and want to succeed in everything I do.

Thank you again for choosing me as a recipient of the Allen Lee Downing Memorial Scholarship! I appreciate the support in my scholastic endeavors. I am hoping to receive another 4.0 this semester and continue to work hard in classes and extracurriculars as well as continue to work in the community and serve as a leader to others.

    Planned Giving Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I consider making a bequest or beneficiary designation to Medaille College?
Both types of legacy commitments enable you to support Medaille College without impacting your current assets. By giving in this way, you may find that you can provide a greater gift than would otherwise be possible. These gifts are also fairly simple to make and often offer valuable tax benefits.

How do legacy gifts help me make an impact at Medaille College?
Legacy commitments provide the College with the fiscal strength and security required for continued growth. Your gifts ensure that future generations benefit from an ever-improving student experience that can transform their lives.

    Can I designate my gift?
Absolutely. While you may provide an unrestricted gift that enables Medaille to address the College’s top priorities, you can also choose to support an area that has personal significance, such as a specific program or department.

Can a legacy gift be directed to a previously established endowed fund?
Yes. In fact, making a bequest or beneficiary designation to an endowed fund enables that enduring resource to keep better pace with the rising cost of education.

What is Medaille College’s federal tax ID?
Medaille College’s federal tax ID is 16-0805158.

What is the Sister Alice Huber Society?
All who make legacy gifts to Medaille College are welcomed into this prominent society, named after Sister Alice Huber, who had the vision and foresight to transition Mount St. Joseph Teachers College to become Medaille College. (The College was named after Father Jean-Pierre Médaille, founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph.) As a member, you will receive special recognition within the College, including distinguished status in Medaille publications, updates on the latest campus news and invitations to exclusive events.
