Medaille Set to Apply for University Designation, Will Transition to Medaille University Upon Anticipated State Approval

Posted by Medaille University Office of Communications

Medaille College is excited to announce that its Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to support its transition to a university designation. Subsequently, the institution will be submitting a charter amendment request to the New York State Education Department, and upon anticipated application approval, will transition to Medaille University.

“The university designation will allow Medaille’s name to better align with its program and degree offerings,” says Medaille College President Dr. Kenneth M. Macur. “It recognizes all of the exceptional work done by Medaille’s faculty, staff, students and alumni, shining a light on the institution’s global impact and reach.”

The decision comes after the state education department’s Board of Regents broadened its definition of a university earlier this year. Now, New York State’s definition of a university is “a higher educational institution offering a range of registered undergraduate and graduate curricula in the liberal arts and sciences, including graduate programs registered in at least three of the following discipline areas: agriculture, biological sciences, business, education, engineering, fine arts, health professions, humanities, physical sciences and social sciences.”

Medaille’s academic offerings currently meet the criteria, and the institution plans to continually develop and expand its programming based on market demands and industry needs.

“The best news is that our students will still be able to benefit from the small class sizes, expert faculty, personalized instruction and student success services that Medaille prides itself on offering as a college community,” says Dr. Macur. “And now, all of those benefits will also come with the excellence and program offerings of a university, along with the prestige of earning a University-awarded degree.”
