Author Lance Strate Recalls a Memorable Guest Lecture at Medaille
Each year, Medaille’s First Year Reading Program selects a book for all freshman to read prior to the start of the fall semester. As fall 2015 students prepare to discuss Michael Oher’s memoir, I Beat the Odds, author Lance Strate is recalling a guest lecture about a past program selection that he gave at Medaille in 2007.
Strate’s book Amazing Ourselves to Death: Neil Postman's Brave New World Revisited was published in 2014. As the Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University explains on his blog, the title for his exploration of Postman’s classic Amusing Ourselves to Death — the 2007 First Year Reading Program selection — came from a public lecture Strate presented at Medaille on November 6, 2007. He recently posted a video link to that talk.
The author was invited to Medaille by philosophy professor Gerald Erion, who asked Strate to discuss the enduring relevance of Postman’s work.
