#MavsSucceed Online: PsyD Student Laurina Van Sloten on Routine and Resiliency

Quote From PsyD Student Laurina Van Sloten
As everyone around the globe faces unprecedented, challenging times, the Medaille College community has come together in shared commitment to help our students successfully complete their education. Our students, faculty and staff have been helping each other navigate this new territory of remote teaching, learning and working, and many have shared anecdotes of encouragement and support.
The #MavsSucceed series will share some of these accounts, and will shine a spotlight on Medaille’s dedicated students, faculty and staff. See more features in the coming months by visiting medaille.edu/mavssucceed or by following the College on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn.
Here, Laurina Van Sloten, a student in Medaille’s Doctor of Clinical Psychology (PsyD) program, shares how the routine of coursework and the support of her professors and classmates have been a comfort amid the chaos of the pandemic.
It makes sense that we would seek answers and cling to routine where we can amid the COVID-19 chaos. I am grateful to have the routine of classes and supportive professors during this unprecedented time. Using the Zoom application, my professors and classmates have been able to meet, see each other, virtually discuss cases and participate in the learning experience together. I have appreciated courses like neuropsychological assessment with Dr. Gary DiNezza, where I am occupied by solving cases and learning about neuroplasticity, rather than worrying about a global pandemic.
As students, we are attempting to accomplish our life goals despite the barriers put in place due to the pandemic. We are resilient people, and our strength will be made evident as we navigate this time of vulnerability and uncertainty together. I have learned to take breaks and set small goals while using self-compassion when I don’t accomplish even the smallest goal I had in mind. I am trying to remember to breathe, bake, connect with people I love and wash my hands! Stay healthy and safe, everyone!
