Medaille Announces Second Phase Expansion of New Sports Complex

Phase II Baseball Field Rendering

Medaille College has announced the second phase of the development of the Medaille Sports Complex, which will add a baseball diamond, three softball diamonds, four dugouts, two batting cages, press boxes, scoreboards, and a multipurpose field with lighting (for field hockey, soccer and lacrosse) to the already robust site. With an expected completion date of summer 2020, Phase II of the Sports Complex was made possible in large part due to the $1 million Higher Education Capital Matching Grant (HECap) awarded to the College earlier this year.

The Medaille Sports Complex is located at 427 Elk Street in South Buffalo and currently serves as the home field of the Mavericks men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams, in addition to offering rental opportunities to the greater community. The owner of the property, South Buffalo Development, will serve as the developer once again for this expansion, and Phase II will add almost seven acres to the Complex. In addition to expanding its seasonal usage, the new space will allow Medaille to add the sport of women’s field hockey to its suite of 18 other competitive NCAA Division III teams come fall 2021, making it the only college in Western New York to offer that sport.

“This is an exciting time for Medaille athletics,” says the College’s Director of Athletics Susan M. Roarke.  “The new space will create a state-of-the-art home for even more of our teams.”

Completed in summer 2019, the first phase of the Medaille Sports Complex included a soccer/lacrosse field with nearly 100,000 square feet of 2 ½” thick turf (the best concussion-rated product on the market), bleachers for 500, an LED-lit scoreboard, a press box and lighting for night games. A 20,000 sq. ft. Athletics Administration Building was also built, which contains six locker rooms, classrooms, office and storage space, a concession stand, and cutting-edge strength and conditioning facilities.

“According to NIRSA (National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association), 68% of students have indicated that campus recreation facilities influence their decision of which college to attend,” says Medaille College President Kenneth Macur, Ph.D. “The Sports Complex allows us to recruit more effectively and retain our athletes, while giving them an A+ facility in which to play.”

The Phase II additions will allow for concurrent play or practice by multiple teams, making it the only complex of its type located in the city of Buffalo. The baseball diamonds will be available for lease, as are the multi-purpose athletic fields. Anyone interested in rental opportunities can contact Susan Roarke at Susan.M.Roarke@medaille.edu, or may fill out the inquiry form at medaille.edu/rent.

“We look forward to working with community partners to host youth travel teams, not-for-profits and adult recreation leagues who are in need of sports facilities to augment their programming,” says Roarke.

Medaille competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Over the past two decades, Medaille’s soccer teams have won 16 championships, and the lacrosse teams have won two championships. Currently, the College’s baseball and softball teams play at McCarthy Park in North Buffalo.
