Medaille College Receives Say Yes Grant From Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Expanding Support and Opportunities for Buffalo Students

Say Yes: Post-Secondary Success for All
As part of the newly established Buffalo College Success Network, Medaille College is able to offer increased access, support and opportunities to students from the city of Buffalo, thanks to Say Yes Buffalo and a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Launched in 2012, the Say Yes Buffalo Partnership is a nationally renowned community collective centered on removing barriers to high school graduation, college access and completion. With good community partners like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Medaille College, Say Yes is now expanding its groundbreaking work to improve outcomes for Buffalo students.
“We are excited about the potential this expanded work has to positively impact young people in Buffalo for years to come,” says Executive Director of Say Yes Buffalo David Rust.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is providing a $2.9 million, 22-month investment to support the launch of the Buffalo College Success Network, along with other efforts to help Buffalo students make successful transitions from high school to college and ultimately complete a post-secondary degree. The Buffalo College Success Network includes Say Yes Buffalo, Buffalo Public Schools and the five local higher education institutions that admit the largest number of Say Yes Buffalo students: Medaille College, Buffalo State College, SUNY Erie, the University at Buffalo and Villa Maria College. Leaders from these institutions worked collectively during the past 12 months to identify specific opportunities for investment that could further remove barriers to postsecondary completion for Buffalo students.
The main goals of the new grant and the Success Network are to increase postsecondary enrollment and persistence among Buffalo public school students, in addition to creating a comprehensive data system that allows for cross collaboration between the public school district and institutions of higher education.
Strategic efforts funded by the grant include the hiring of college success counselors who will work with Medaille College Say Yes students on a one-on-one basis. The counselors and the establishment of additional on-campus resources and support services aim to help students overcome challenges and remove barriers to their academic success.
Medaille has been a Say Yes Buffalo partner from the program’s inception, and the College shares the belief that every student should have access to quality educational opportunities, from preschool to post-secondary completion.
