Medaille Professor Discusses Parents and Alcohol With Your Teen Magazine

Internationally recognized behavioral couples therapy (BCT) expert Keith Klostermann, Ph.D., LMFT, LMHC, an assistant professor in Medaille’s master's in marriage and family therapy program, was recently interviewed for an article in Your Teen magazine titled “Parents and Alcohol: What Teens Learn When Parents Drink.” Dr. Klostermann discussed the impact of parental alcohol use on children. He says it is important for parents to drink responsibly, and to understand that their actions effect how kids perceive alcohol.

“Responsible drinking means that you never have to feel sorry for what happened while you were drinking,” says Dr. Klostermann. “It’s not only how much or often you drink. It’s also the choices you make, such as abstaining when ill or taking medications, or being the designated driver.”

Dr. Klostermann adds that “[g]lib comments about drinking seem harmless. But they may convey an unintended message of using alcohol as a coping strategy.”

Your Teen is a bi-monthly print magazine focused on the issues impacting teenagers today.
