Reading Center

Medaille College's Reading Center

Medaille's Reading Center offers literacy instruction to students in grades Pre K-12. Literacy Specialists provide individualized instruction to children one-on-one and in small group settings.

Tutors complete a full battery of informal assessment in the areas of reading, writing and word study before beginning instruction. Children receive individualized instruction designed to meet their distinct needs and parents are provided with a report reflecting their child's developmental levels and areas of strengths and need at the end of the semester.

Whether participants need intensive instruction or a semester of support to accelerate learning, our method of utilizing assessment-driven instruction meets the developmental needs of the children in our center in a unique and effective way. Sessions include tutoring focusing on word recognition, decoding skills, comprehension strategies, fluency instruction, vocabulary development, word study and an emphasis on teaching writing skills.

Children respond well to the individualized instruction and attention they receive in the center. Possibly one of the most important areas of improvement we see is in their confidence and motivation!
