Cat Warren

Her non-fiction book, What the Dog Knows: Scent, Science, and the Amazing Ways Dogs Perceive the World (Touchstone paperback 2015) is, according to the New York Times, “a fascinating, deeply reported journey into scent, death, forensics and the amazing things dogs can do with their noses.”  It has been a NYT bestseller and was long-listed for the PEN/EO Wilson Literary Science Writing Award.  It has been published in Spain and Japan and is being published in China, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

A professor in the Department of English at North Carolina State University, she teaches creative nonfiction, reporting, editing, and science journalism.  A former newspaper reporter, Warren covered crime, poverty, the environment, and politics at newspapers across the United States before starting her academic career.

She continues her “unusual hobby” of handling a cadaver dog with her newest dog, Jaco.  She lives with her husband, David, in Durham, North Carolina.
